I am an associate professor of Sociology<\/a>\u00a0at the University of Akron, OH, <\/a>\u00a0and I am also a Certified Clinical Sociological Practitioner<\/a>.\u00a0 As a qualitative sociologist, I focus not only on how oppression and privilege shape lived experiences but also on the theoretical and methodological praxis that advances human rights, multispecies justice, and academic kindness. My interventionist scholarship is situated around gender disparities within the U.S. criminal legal system, with an emphasis on environmental justice and reproductive justice, and I am also interested in enhancing the student experience with scholarship of teaching and learning.<\/p>\n

Latest Doings…<\/strong><\/p>\n

In June 2025, I was interviewed for the story\u00a0Guards gone wild? Inappropriate relationships between jailers and inmates has union calling for hiring changes. <\/a>\u00a0I emphasized that newer officers are particularly vulnerable, and advocated for creating a “culture of integrity” by implementing mental health and wellness support, which could reduce the likelihood of officers feeling compelled to seek connection through crossing professional boundaries.<\/p>\n

My first co-authored book, Gardening Behind Bars,<\/a> appeared with Springer in Spring 2024. It concludes years of applied research on gardening in incarcerated settings. I stay in the field as a member of the Ecologies of Justice<\/a> collective,\u00a0and we are preparing an edited volume featuring incarcerated authors, practitioners, and scholars from all over the country.<\/p>\n

I produce\u00a0two unique teaching podcasts. My\u00a0Corrections Close Up<\/em>\u00a0podcast<\/a>\u00a0contains 17 mini-interviews with criminal justice professionals. The podcast project\u00a0Why Sociology?<\/em><\/a> I created with Dr. Angela Adkins and so far it consists of eight episodes of interviews with Sociology graduates in applied career fields. More to come!<\/p>\n

I am a member of Sociologists for Women in Society<\/a> (serving on the publications committee) and I serve on the Board of the Association for Applied and Clinical Sociologists,<\/a> as well as on the Board of RC46 of the International Sociological Association.<\/p>\n

In spring 2018 I officially joined my friends at\u00a0 Queer STS\u00a0 <\/a>and 2020 I got to co-edit two intriguing issues of the Queer STS Forum #5<\/a> about “doing” queer STS in pandemic time, featuring a cool collective writing piece<\/a> from feminist mothering graz<\/a> I helped birth years ago. The latest issue I co-edited is Queer STS Forum #7 (2022): Towards Academic Kindness \u2013 A queer-feminist string figure on kinder working cultures in academia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I am honored to be board member of the Red Bird Center for Healing,<\/a> and excited to serve on the advisory board for Chagrin Arts<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I was so excited that I got to comment on the amazing work of Liz Lerman on at the Dancing Conversation: Women & Witchcraft<\/a> organized by the fabulous NCC Akron<\/a> on May 20, 2021.<\/p>\n
